Academics and Honors

Extension Programs

Before-school and after-school programs are available Monday-Friday for an additional cost. Students who attend these programs are expected to follow the directions of the program supervisors. Any student who disrupts the programs will not be permitted to return and it will be the parents’ responsibility to make alternative arrangements for their child/children.

Special Programs

Title I – A Department of Education program that provides reinforcement of reading and writing skills.
AIS – A school program that provides reinforcement of reading and math skills to students who need extra help.

Curriculum

Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Academy follows the basic Common Core curriculum and learning standards set by the New York State Department of Education and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. All subjects taught are regarded as main subjects, especially Religious Studies.

All non-Catholic students are required to take Religion class as a subject.

Homework Grades (N-8)

– Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday, weekends and holidays are left to each teacher’s discretion.
– Homework is the responsibility of the student.
– Parents are responsible to oversee the completion of homework.
– Students are expected to complete their homework and submit it on time to the teacher.
– No student will be permitted to call home for forgotten assignments or books.
– No forgotten assignments will be accepted.
– Notification of delinquent homework or class preparedness will be sent home.
– Homework and class preparedness will go towards the final grade.

Homework When a Student Is Absent

When your child is absent, the following should be done: A request for homework must be made before 9:30 AM. When your child returns to school, they can make up class work. Homework will be available for pick-up at the front desk after 2:30 PM.

Honor Categories and Criteria

Principal’s List
– No mark lower than 95%. These honors are based on the five major subjects – Religion, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.
– 4 or 3 in the minor subjects – Physical Education, Music, and Computer
– 4 or 3 in each Subject Area and all subdivisions of Personal Progress

First Honors
– No mark lower than 90%. These honors are based on the five major subjects – Religion, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.
– 4 or 3 in the minor subjects – Physical Education, Music and Computer
– 4 or 3 in each Subject Area and all subdivisions of Personal Progress

Second Honors
– No mark lower that 85%. These honors are based on the five major subjects – Religion, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.
– 4 or 3 in the minor subjects- Physical Education, Music and Computer
– 4 or 3 in each Subject Area and in all subdivisions of Personal Progress.

Perfect Attendance and Punctuality

Awards will be given to those students who have been present in school, and on time, every day for the entire year. Students must be present for the entire day for Perfect Attendance Awards.
